Welcome the "Boxer Hero"

Submitted by Phillip Landis

A few weeks ago, a visitor sent me the following story that touched me so deeply that I wanted to share it with all of my faithful boxer friends. The following story is unedited because I think it deserves to be told exactly the way I heard it....
white boxer dog About a year ago a white boxer named “PJ” came into my life after suffering years of neglect, abuse and fear. My daughter had agreed to “watch him” for 30 days while his owner went to jail for some alcohol and drug related offense. When I saw him it took ten seconds for me to know he was home for good.

Shot during an argument between his owner and another man, and without attention from a vet, his left rear leg had rotted to the point of system wide infection, leaving PJ near death. Finally, a relative of PJ’s owner insisted that he be taken to a vet, where a portion of the infected leg was amputated, saving his life.

Frequently left closed up in a house without food and water while his drugged out owner was “away”, neighbors took pity and fed him frozen deer meat. He wandered the area begging, frequently crossing a busy highway. One day he did not make it across and a UPS van ran over him, leaving a tire mark across his abdomen. He crawled off into the woods, not seen for days. But somehow he survived, finding his way to a small store nearby where my daughter fed him scraps, giving him love and attention. During his stay with me I fell in love with him, and we told his uncaring owner that PJ had found a new home.

Although doing very well now, PJ is still terrified of the sound of gunshots and thunder, and trembles with terror even when he sees a shotgun. Beaten, starved, abandoned, run over by a huge van, shot and left to die, yet he is the sweetest, most gentle, loving dog I have ever known, a living testimony to the spirit of the breed.

Here's hoping that Phillip and P.J. enjoy their time together...they certainly deserve it.
